There´s a lot more rock attitude in a stupid punk rock song than in most metal bands repertoire. I agree that there are great metal bands, but most of it is “hey, look how I can make a guitar solo that lasts 350 minutes and makes anyone who´s not an arrogant prick like me sleep!”
Also, notice I said punk rock. Real punk rock. I don´t mean Green Day, obviously.
The rivalry between punk and metal pretty much died ages ago, and for good reason considering the genres have so much in common. Look at Suicidal Tendencies, and Slayer’s punk covers. Good s**t

Coming up with a guitar solo requires guitar skill. There are those who mastered at “guitar solos” and become metal legends. People who can’t play guitar, however, decide on having punk rock bands, moaning like sissies or just jumping on cars to show people they’re “rebellious” because… noone jumps on cars I guess.
Please note: most punk was great because it had metal influences in it anyway.
Besides. Most hardcore punk bands (Hardcore punk being the best punk sub-genres) evolved into Crossover Thrash or just plain Thrash Metal. And most of the better punk sub-genres (Crust and Grindcore) have metal influences in them.
Just face it. Punk and Metal go together. See: GISM.
